How we build the directory

Updated

Pilates Class Hub lists 12,992 pilates studios, and 15 cities have their own page. Each listing starts from open map data, is matched against Google Maps results, and is re-checked on a fixed schedule. The latest hours check was on Oct 6, 2026. This page explains every source, rule and formula behind those numbers.

Where the data comes from

We combine three sources. None of them pays us, and Google does not endorse this site.

Overture Maps Foundation. The base list of studios, their locations and stable IDs come from the Overture Maps Places dataset (overturemaps.org). We take every US place tagged as a pilates studio, plus places with pilates in the name under neighboring categories. Google Maps results add listings Overture lacks, but only when the listing’s own name, services or description say pilates or reformer; a gym that Google shows for a pilates search is not enough. Overture Places data is available under the CDLA Permissive 2.0, Apache 2.0 and CC0 1.0 licenses, depending on the original source.

Foursquare. Part of the Overture Places data comes from Foursquare, which Overture transformed to its own schema. That data is copyright Foursquare Labs, Inc. and available under Apache 2.0. The full Foursquare notice is in our NOTICE.txt file.

Google Maps results, via DataForSEO. Hours, ratings, review counts and whether a business has claimed its Google listing come from Google Maps search results, retrieved through DataForSEO, a data provider. We also use DataForSEO’s business listings data for attributes, services and the prices studios publish there. We don’t use the Google Places API, and we don’t copy data from other directories or booking sites.

Besides those, we check each studio’s website to see whether it still loads, and we use official brand pages (such as clubpilates.com) for chain-wide facts like membership price ranges. Those facts carry a numbered citation that links to the source list on this page.

How we match and check records

The same studio often appears in more than one source. We treat two records as the same studio when their phone numbers match after cleaning up the formatting. If there’s no phone match, we match on a cleaned-up name plus a location within 100 meters.

When the Overture record and the Google-derived record disagree on the address or phone, we flag the listing as a mismatch for review instead of guessing which one is right. Overture does not carry Google data, so this is a real cross-check between independent sources.

We keep track of where every field came from and when it was last checked. An unknown value shows as “Not listed”. We never fill a gap with zero.

What earns a page

We only build pages that have enough real data to be useful:

  • City pages need at least 3 open studios with published hours. Towns below that line still appear, listed under the nearest city that has a page.
  • Studio pages need at least 5 of these 8 details: phone, website, hours, rating, services, attributes, neighborhood, and a class type we can confirm. Studios below that line aren’t given a page. Studio pages are also released in waves, most complete listings first; the current floor is stated under Page rules below.
  • City pages for a class type (such as reformer pilates in one city) need at least 3 studios where we can confirm that class type.

These rules decide what gets built. They’re not a judgment of any studio’s quality.

How we assign class types

A studio gets a class type, such as reformer or prenatal, from the first of these places that mentions it:

  1. Its Google business category
  2. Its name
  3. Its listed services or attributes
  4. Its free-text description

The first three count toward class-type pages and filters. A type found only in a description still shows on the studio page, labeled “listed in description”, because a passing mention isn’t the same as a class on the schedule. Always confirm with the studio.

Ratings and how we rank studios

Every rating on this site is a Google rating, shown with its review count and a link to the studio’s Google Maps listing, for example “4.8 on Google (42 reviews)”. We never show review text, reviewer names or photos.

City pages include a short list of the highest-scoring studios. This is the only place we rank studios, and the rule is the same everywhere:

Ranked by Google rating times the base-10 log of (review count + 1). Ties go to the studio with more complete data, then by name.

The log of the review count rewards studios with many reviews without letting volume swamp the rating. Studios with no rating aren’t ranked at all.

Worked example. Studio A has a 4.9 rating from 12 reviews: 4.9 × log10(13) = 5.46. Studio B has a 4.6 rating from 310 reviews: 4.6 × log10(311) = 11.47. Studio C has a 5.0 rating from 3 reviews: 5.0 × log10(4) = 3.01. The order is B, A, C. A perfect score from three reviews ranks below a strong score from hundreds.

Default studio lists use the same order, followed by unrated studios sorted by how complete their data is, then by name.

Prices

Studio prices come from the services and prices studios publish on their Google business listings. We show them as published, with the date we checked them.

City and national figures follow two rules. We show a median drop-in price only when at least 5 studios in the area publish one, and a price range only when at least 2 do. Every median is shown with the number of studios behind it.

Chain prices, such as Club Pilates membership ranges, come only from the brand’s official pages and carry a citation.

Closures

A studio becomes a closure candidate when it’s missing from two monthly Google Maps pulls in a row and its website no longer loads. Closure candidates are hidden from pages and reviewed by hand. A dead website alone only raises a flag.

How often we refresh

  • Monthly: Google Maps results for every city with a page (hours, ratings, review counts, presence in results), and website checks.
  • Quarterly: Overture Maps and DataForSEO business listings (new studios, attributes, services and prices).

Every refresh is logged with its date and counts on the changelog. We don’t claim fresher data than that.

What we don’t do

We don’t visit studios, accept payment for listings or rankings, or show ads on directory pages. We don’t quote reviews. We don’t make health or medical claims about pilates.

Corrections and claims

Studio owners and visitors can send corrections, and studios can claim their listing. Both go to the same inbox; see the contact page. We check each request against the sources above before changing a listing.

Licenses and attribution

Page rules, as the build applies them

  • A city gets a page when at least 3 of its open studios list their hours.
  • A studio qualifies for a page when at least 5 of the 8 details listed above are filled in.
  • A city page for one class type needs at least 3 open studios where we can confirm that type.
  • Studio pages are released in waves, starting with the most complete listings. Right now a studio needs at least 7 of the 8 details for its page to go live. 1,967 studios in cities with a page pass the 5-detail rule, and 836 of them have a page today. The rest are counted on their city page and get their own page as later waves go out.

The ranking rule on a real studio

Ranked by Google rating times the base-10 log of (review count + 1). Ties go to the studio with more complete data, then by name.

The highest-scoring studio with a page in pilates classes in Austin is TruFusion South Austin: 4.8 on Google (601 reviews)(opens Google Maps in a new tab)

Score = 4.8 × log10(601 + 1) = 4.8 × 2.78 = 13.34

Hours

Hours come from the studio's Google listing on the date shown; confirm with the studio before you go.
